Approach 1: New company/environment with opening balances

A new company/environment is created in early January 2026, in which everything is in euros.
Opening balances of the warehouse, customers, suppliers, open items, etc. are imported. The old database is stored for the purposes of the annual closing of 2025 in BGN.

Advantages:

The business starts working in euros as early as 01.01.2026.
Accounting can safely close 2025 in the old database (in BGN).
Possibility of preliminary preparation of the new environment.

Challenges:

Historical data remains in a separate database and requires consolidation if necessary.
Need to work in parallel with the old and new environments for a certain period.

Approach 2: Database conversion

In the first days of January 2026, all contracts, price lists, customers, suppliers, etc. are converted to euros. The business can immediately start issuing documents and working with euros. The conversion of the entire database (including historical transactions) is carried out later, depending on the readiness of the accounting, with typical options being after January 14, 2026 (after submitting VAT for December 2025) or after the annual closing of 2025.

Advantages:

The business is already working with euros at the beginning of January 2026.

The complete database and transaction history are preserved.

More flexible choice of the moment for the conversion of the entire database according to the accounting readiness.

Challenges:

The process is technologically more difficult and requires careful planning.

For large databases, the conversion time can be days, not hours.
